Abstract:
Practical use of prewetted structural lightweight aggregate to provide moisture for the internal curing of concrete is described. Laboratory research, conducted to determine the optimum amount of lightweight aggregate, as well as field applications, including recent construction of a 250,000 yd3 (190,000 m3) paving project, are described. Comparison with similar mixtures with conventional aggregates shows that prewetted lightweight aggregate can lead to increased compressive strength, enhanced workability, and reduced shrinkage cracking.
