Abstract:
To solve a placing problem in walls that were highly congested with reinforcing steel, piping, conduits, and blockouts for windows and doors, the concrete contractor for the Las Vegas Desert Living Center used self-consolidating concrete. In addition, premixed liquid color pigments were needed to get the consistent adobe-colored walls with an exposed, weathered appearance required by the architects. Conceived as a green building project that would qualify for the Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, this unique project also includes rammed earth and straw-bale walls with high insulation values.
