Abstract:
Gabbro and harzburgite stones have been recently introduced to Kuwait and other Gulf-region countries as coarse aggregate for concrete. This paper discusses their properties, since no service record of their performance is available to users in the area. Upon comparing their properties with those of other types available in Kuwait, both stones were denser, more resistant to abrasion, less absorbent, and generally stronger than locally produced gravel or imported limestone. The mineral composition determined by petrographic examination on thin sections was compared with available literature on both materials. Both gabbro and harzburgite contained minerals in altered condition by different degrees. Harzburgite consisted of serpentine minerals known in literature by their low resistance to weathering. The alkali reactivity of both gabbro and harzburgite was determined using three laboratory tests. Both aggregates were found innocuous.
