Abstract:
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of a historic meeting to oppose the apartheid government, a large public square named after anti-apartheid leader Walter Sisulu was constructed in Kliptown, South Africa. Tilt-up construction played an important role in two prominent features of the project—the monumental Freedom Towers (honored with a Tilt-Up Concrete Association 2006 Excellence in Achievement Award) and curvilinear sloped walls in a multi-purpose building.
