Abstract:
This paper considers the practical application of an observational and empirical approach to the design and subsequent adjusting of tunnel supports and linings. First we will discuss methods for a realistic classification and characterization of the rock traversed by the tunnel, and for the monitoring of lining performance; then the practical application of these methods at various stages in typical project, at the feasibility stage and later in the course of construction.
