Abstract:
In 1972-73 it was realised that there were likely to be many kilometers of tunnels to be built in the U.K. before the end of the century particularly for long distance water transmission and sewerage disposal and that many of these tunnels would be in rock. It was also noted that there had been little innovation in rock tunnelling practice in the U.K. in recent decades compared with the developments that had taken place in Europe or with the significant improvements that had taken place in soft ground tunnelling in the U.K.
