Abstract:
The partial demolition of a lifeline bridge during the revolution of 1997 in the Republic of the Congo severely hampered the distribution of food and the restoration of commerce in the Congo. Ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements of the concrete piers remaining under the bridge and on an adjacent previous alignment were made under uniquely austere conditions. These provided the basis for the use of these substructure elements in the rapid restoration of vehicular traffic.
