Abstract:
An overview of concrete as a material is provided in this three-part series. Discussed are the fundamental properties of concrete with particular reference to cement paste, viewed at the atomic, particle, and micromorphological levels. Their close relation to the behavior of concrete in structures is discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of concrete as a building material are reviewed.
