Abstract:
Steel fiber reinforced concrete is being used in the precast tunnel lining segments for Metro Line 9 in Barcelona, Spain, and will also be used in two future sections with a total length of about 12 km (7.5 mile). To determine the most appropriate mixture proportions for the tunnel segments, both the design requirements and the conditions under which the segments would be fabricated were considered. Tests were performed to determine the optimum dosages of high-range water-reducing admixtures so that benefit/cost ratios could be used to select a product. The mixture proportions that would provide adequate workability, high early-age strength, and adequate toughness were also evaluated to provide a basis for the choice of fiber type.
