Abstract:
Prescriptive specifications for concrete have served us reasonably well in the past, but they tend to inhibit the most efficient use of currently available materials and are far from a guarantee of concrete durability. Moving to performance-based specifications could enable concrete producers to be more imaginative and innovative in their use of materials. The new test methods needed for moving to performance specifications are discussed.
