Abstract:
This article summarizes a research program that was undertaken to develop a novel method of driving piles. The new toe driving technique was specifically developed to install empty FRP shells and other thin-walled piles that can be subsequently filled with self-consolidating concrete. Driving tests were carried out on steel cylindrical piles and cylindrical and tapered FRP piles installed in dense dry sand using the new technique and conventional hammering at the pile head. The specimens were instrumented to investigate their dynamic behavior during driving and their response to static compressive, uplift, and lateral loading.
