Abstract:
In the center of Milan, three prestressed concrete bridges built over a six-lane railway represent one of the most complex applications of the incremental launching construction method in Italy. Two of the bridges were dedicated to road traffic, while the third was a two-lane tramway. Several logistic difficulties were overcome -- including the close proximity of electrical wires, settlement problems, and severe site restrictions -- yet the job was completed on schedule and without interruption to either rail or road traffic. Upon reaching its final position, the bridge deck was stayed to a concrete tower, resulting in a permanent cable-stayed scheme. This was the first application in Italy of a construction method adopted only a few times in the world.
