Abstract:
This paper presents an ultimate strength approach to examine the strength interaction behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete (RC) columns. Slenderness effects of columns are examined using a numerical integration technique. Due to the differences in material stress/strain responses, balance points do not appear in the strength interactions of concrete columns reinforced with FRP bars. These columns may exhibit increased moment resistance at low axial load levels. The analytical results show that FRP RC columns have a tendency to undergo brittle-tension failure. The failure is associated with tension rupture of FRP bars in which the strain in the outermost tension reinforcing bar layer reaches or exceeds its ultimate level at or prior to the concrete reaching its ultimate strain in compression. This type of failure is expected to be sudden. The occurrence of brittle-tension failure implies that the current ACI 318-05 reinforcement ratio limits may not be adequate for RC columns reinforced with FRP bars.
