Abstract:
Reinforced concrete may have been invented in Newcastle upon Tyne in the northeast of England and certainly the area developed as a major center for the use of this structural material. Recent research has shown that this part of the island nation held a unique position in the history of concrete technology. The work of William Boutland Wilkinson, Francois Hennebique, Louis Mouchel, and others are outlined in this review of the applications of reinforced concrete in the area in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century.
