Abstract:
To verify the technical suitability and economic viability of concrete slab systems on spans longer than 25 ft (7.6 m), a survey was conducted of 34 cast-in-place, precast, and composite office buildings with long slab spans (exceeding 25 ft or 7.6 m). Two additional cast-in-place buildings with conventional slab spans of 25 ft (7.6 m) or less ere included in the survey for purposes of comparison. The cast-in-place slab systems included one-way joists, flat plates or flat slabs, and one-way slabs-on-beams in both reinforced and post-tensioned concrete. The economics of the various slab systems, expressed in quantities of material per square foot of floor area, are presented and discussed in this paper.
