Abstract:
ACI 318-051 considers that factored unbalanced moment Mu transferred between column and slab is resisted in part (?vMu) by shear and the remaining part ((1 - ?v)Mu) by flexure. The code specifies the fraction ?v and permits, in ection 13.5.3.3,1 that ?v be reduced when the factored shear force Vu, transferred between slab and interior, edge, or corner column does not exceed 40, 75, or 50%, respectively, of the shear capacity Vc . An experimental investigation of an edge column-slab connection subjected to shear force combined with unbalanced moment reversals is presented. In addition, published data of tests on slab-column connections transferring Vu combined with Mu are reviewed. The experimental data are discussed in conjunction with the design permitted by Section 13.5.3.3.1 It is concluded that the code section can, in some cases, lead to unsafe design and its deletion is thus recommended.
