Abstract:
Current design criteria focus on the alternate path (AP) method of preventing progressive collapse of structures subjected to blast loading. However, specific local resistance (SLR) concepts can also be used during the original design or during a retrofit. SLR concepts have been shown to increase a building’s blast resistance and have recently been incorporated into the Department of Defense Unified Facilities Criteria. The author provides an overview of a retrofit procedure that uses the SLR method and the blast tests used to validate it, along with a discussion of the relative benefits of the AP and SLR methods.
