Abstract:
An innovative mechanical device was developed and successfully used inthis research program to apply low levels of prestressing force to glass fiber reinforcedpolymer (GFRP) bars. In addition, this device contains special features that allow for theapplication of GFRP bars to the retrofit of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls using thetechnique typically known as near surface mounted (NSM) reinforcement. Experimentalstudies were undertaken to investigate the feasibility of using this device for the retrofitof URM walls. A theoretical model was developed to calculate the shear capacity ofURM walls retrofitted with prestressed NSM-GFRP bars. Numerical results matched wellwith the experimental results, which are described and presented in this paper.
