Abstract:
In two-way slab systems, large unbalanced moments must be transferred between the slab and exterior columns. The column-slab interface can be minimal, making the connection at this point critical. These connections can be very complicated to analyze and design, particularly given the approximate nature of the final answer. Surprisingly, although the geometry of the connection dramatically affects several intermediate values, it has minimal effect on the final answer. This article describes ways in which this complex analysis can be substantially simplified.
