Abstract:
Transverse confinement reinforcing is required in moment frame joints to provide lateral support for the vertical bars during a seismic event. After discovering that half of the required confinement steel was inadvertently left out of the joints in a California parking garage, the project structural engineers worked closely with the owner, architect, and contractor to quickly design a reliable and constructible repair that also respected the original architectural design.
