Abstract:
Steel or hybrid steel/concrete coupling beams are an attractive alternative to conventionally and/or diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams in coupled wall systems. Such hybrid coupled walls can better accommodate short floor-to-floor heights and compact core plans. Additionally, hybrid coupled systems can provide greater versatility in the placement of openings (and hence coupling beams) in a wall plan. In addition, hybrid coupling beams can significantly increase the viability of coupled core wall lateral force resisting systems by enhancing the range of beam shear capacity for which they may be designed.
