Abstract:
While much of the important basic research and development on pavements predates the age of computerization, considerable research continues on rigid pavements. Variables that affect experimental results are discussed, including foundations, concrete strength, fatigue, and concrete properties. The important events in the evolution of pavement design are outlined. A review of the design concept known as "PAST-PIF," first introduced in 1977, is given. The future research needs for PCC pavement construction are stressed.
