Abstract:
Caesar Rodney (1730 to 1783), the premier patriot of the State of Delaware, is celebrated by a monument in the central square of the state=s capital of Dover. Erected in 1923, the 7500 lb (3400 kg) brass statue of rider and horse cantilevers for support off the animal=s rear legs. In 1997, the Wilmington Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) hired LZA Technology, Philadelphia, PA, to investigate pronounced distress and degradation of the masonry pedestal supporting the statue. LZA proposed a number of repair solutions, and DPR called for the removal and replication of the cast stone down to the water table level.
