Abstract:
Concrete decks, in bridges built using I-girder/deck systems, are typically made composite with the girders that support them. Composite construction has many structural advantages over noncomposite construction. Demolition of a bridge deck that is compositely connected to its supporting girders is a major concern in deck replacement projects. Two recently developed composite connection systems provide full composite action between the deck and the girders while in service, but also facilitate deck removal and replacement if necessary.
