Abstract:
A new construction method replacing rigid formwork panels with a flexible textile membrane, provides numerous advantages and opportunities for architecture, engineering, and construction. Inexpensive formwork fabrics provide sacrificial or reusable formwork in precast and cast-in-place applications including: foundations, walls, columns, capitals, slabs, and beams. Permeable membranes produce flawless, cement-rich finishes and stronger “case hardened” concrete members. Structurally efficient variable section members are easily formed, reducing material costs and dead weight. Formwork material and storage costs are also reduced. This article introduces this new technology, offering a brief history of the field, and citing current work and applications.
