Abstract:
The application of basic materials science in this work, and the development of experimental technique, were brilliantly envisaged and implemented. This exploration of the physical nature of hardened cement paste proved essential for the recognition of the importance of air entrainment for the frost resistance of field concrete and the concurrent development of air-entraining agents. The intellectual appeal of this new scientific approach--and its successful outcome in the concurrent national concrete construction boom--engendered a contemporary surge of investment in research. This surge made it possible to attract a new generation of science-minded university professors and students to which the "Powers Bible" became an indispensable tutorial textbook.
