Abstract:
Maturity testing methods for determining concrete strength have been around for over sixty years, but they are not widely used and most engineers don’t known about them. Maturity testing methods are based on basic mathematical formulas derived for calculating a maturity index. The index is associated with the relationships between a concrete mixture’s temperature changes, its curing (hydration) rate, and its rate of strength development. ASTM C-1074, at present in draft form, has been developed for regulating and ensuring the proper use of the maturity testing method for determining in-place concrete strength. Even with the long history of maturity testing, the standard still considers it an experimental and approximate method.
