Abstract:
This paper presents an experimental and analytical investigation of reinforced concrete columns subjected to unequal load eccentricities. The experimental results of 18 high-strength concrete (HSC) columns and a computer-aided method to analyze reinforced concrete columns subjected to unequal load eccentricities are described. Using the results of a parametric study based on the analytical method, the simplified formula for equivalent eccentricity recommended in the ACI 318 and AS 3600 Codes is evaluated. It is found that the equation recommended in these design codes for estimating the equivalent moment correction factor for use in moment magnifier method may result in an unsafe prediction of the failure load of reinforced concrete columns. A modified simple equation that predicts the failure load conservatively is therefore proposed.
