Abstract:
Concrete slabs that are built flat do not stay flat. The engineer must accept curling as a design challenge. Jointed, unreinforced slabs have the lowest initial cost but will usually generate an added expense needed to close the gap between the floor flatness measured soon after construction and the flatness that exists when the floor covering installers arrive. Whatever the choices, engineers and architects need to remember that a floor won’t stay flat unless it’s designed to stay flat.
