Abstract:
During the late 1950s and through the 1960s, the Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, FL, was one of the area’s hot spots. By 1990, the resort had closed its main hotel tower, only keeping a small, low-rise facility open. In the late 1990s, the owner, the pension fund of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters decided to demolish the existing complex and build a new resort from scratch. The centerpiece of the resort is a 41-story, 996-room hotel, with a 10 story high hole in its middle serving as a giant “window” to the ocean. An enclosed pedestrian walkway connects the hotel to an 8-story, convention center, including a column-free Great Hall exhibition space.
