Abstract:
The north and south tubes of the Bergen Tunnel, built in 1877 and 1908, respectively, remain active arteries channeling rail traffic from Jersey City, NJ, to the Hoboken Terminal. These venerated treasures of the New Jersey Transit Authority (NJTA)—which provide four tracks into Hoboken and carry nearly 24,000 riders a day—are in the midstages of renovation. While the south tube requires only minimal repair and will remain open during construction, the north tube was taken out of commission in February 2001 and is undergoing major structural rehabilitation.
