Abstract:
The Old Colorado River Bridge in Yuma, AZ, opened to traffic in 1915. The superstructure was originally designed as a two-span steel truss bridge with a main span of 336 ft (100 m) and an approach span of 105 ft (32 m). In 1988, after more than 70 years of service, closure of the bridge to vehicular traffic became necessary when questions arose concerning its structural integrity. In 1996, the Arizona Department of Transportation awarded a $500,000 grant for bridge rehabilitation to include seismic strengthening, heat strengthening of steel truss members, and the partial replacement of the deteriorated bridge deck.
