Abstract:
People to People International, founded by Dwight D. Eisenhower, coordinated the visit of an ACI delegation to Cuba in September 2001. A goal also: improve public relations, but more importantly, encourage an exchange of technology with that small country, which lies just 90 mi (145 km) from the U.S. coast. In eight days, the 13-person delegation visited four major cities: Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and Veradero. While in Havana, the group toured the grounds of Expo Cuba, an event similar to World of Concrete but on a much smaller scale. A large group of professionals from the Cuban Ministry of Construction, and from a local ready-mix company, Ticon, accompanied the tour. Afterwards, they invited the visiting group to participate in a professional exchange of ideas—the Cubans being eager for discussion. And because many of their Cuban standards follow ACI guidelines, their first inquiry concerned the possibility of eventually establishing an ACI chapter in Cuba.
