Abstract:
Masonry has a relatively large compressive strength but only a low tensile strength. Therefore, masonry has been used primarily as a construction material for vertical members subjected essentially to gravity loads. Small lateral loads may be resisted due to the weight of the walls. However, for larger lateral loads, walls with low axial loads exhibit a poor cracking behavior and a low strength. To overcome these disadvantages, masonry has been post-tensioned to actively introduce an axial load to enhance strength, performance, and durability of masonry structures both for new and for retrofitting existing structures.
