Abstract:
On March 3, 2000, several people in Hyderabad, India, witnessed the violent shaking of a 6-story structure. One and a half hours later, part of the building collapsed. The structure, constructed of reinforced concrete with in-filled brick walls, did suffer extensive damage. The Municipal Corp., Hyderabad, asked the author to investigate the cause of this failure and to suggest measures that would avoid such incidents in the future. Beginning on March 3, 2000, the author visited the site several times along with colleagues and students to collect data as the debris was being removed.
