Abstract:
The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) project under construction in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is monumental in all aspects: in scale, in purpose, in use and distribution of material (particularly concrete), in workforce size, and in its eventual impact not only on its immediate region, but on the Chinese nation as a whole. Begun in 1993, the TGD project will be completed in 2009 with costs as high as $30 billion U.S. Protagonists for the project see it bestowing many benefits in the future; antagonists perceive negative effects emanating from the completed dam. In essence, TGD represents a panorama of engineering, environmental, social, and economic consequences.
