Abstract:
This article presents the results of petrographic examination of currently manufactured and older in-service mortar coatings. Based on analyses of 11 mortar samples from pipe of varying ages (0 to 60 years old), the mortar samples were evaluated for durability to withstand corrosion. The analyses demonstrated that the mortar coating samples taken from in-service concrete pressure pipes of varying ages displayed excellent durability. All coatings provided effective corrosion protection for the steel elements of the pipe. Furthermore, recent improvements to the mortar coatings should offer even better protection.
