Abstract:
Concrete overlays are often used to resurface or rehabilitate deteriorating reinforced concrete bridge decks. Overlays are usually placed in 50 to 80 mm (2.0 to 3.25 in.) layers to provide a wearing surface and extend deck life. As with concrete patches or shotcrete repairs, overlays require good bond strength to the existing concrete for durability. This article uses field experience from Alberta, Canada, as a basis of discussion regarding concrete-to-concrete debonding mechanisms, contributing factors to debonding, and expected overlay service life.
