Abstract:
Bridge replacement in Lowell, Mass., where minimum traffic interuption was necessary, led to the adoption of precast reinforced concrete units. Available mobile hoisting equipment limited the maximum weight of sections to about 12 tons which permitted small bridges to be precast as complete structures, while for larger bridges, subassemblies were precast and incorporated into the bridge by a cast-in-place deck. The precasting procedures and construction processes are described and illustrated.
