Abstract:
A general method for the design of arches taking into account all important factors such as dead and live loading and the effect of volume changes, abutment movements and arch deflections. Because of the nonlinear relation between loads and the bending momentscaused by deflections, it is found necessary to use an ultimate strength method of design taking into consideration the total effect of critical loading conditions including possible overload. The method permits the proportioning of a rib for optimum stiffness under assumed conditions, thus providing the most economical and satisfactory design. While it has been general practice to disregard the effect of arch rib deflections, it should be included in the analysis to provide a proper safety factor against buckling and failure due to bending.
