Abstract:
A theoretical study of steel-confined concrete is presented using a constitutive model of concrete under a generalized stress state developed from tests on plain concrete by Kotsovos. A modification factor is incorporated into Kotsovos’ model to account for the nonuniformity of confinement in steel-confined concrete and the consequent departure from the idealistic tests on hydrostatically confined plain concrete. Published data on steel-confined, circular-section concrete columns are analyzed using the modified model. A good prediction of the stress-strain curves of the confined concrete was obtained.
