Abstract:
There is considerable research being carried out, and reported, on various aspects of concrete durability including the mechanisms of attack, the benefits of various mineral and chemical admixtures, the maximum allowable limits on contaminants, and the necessary properties of concrete. However, there has been relatively little work reported on structures that have been designed, specified, constructed, and monitored with concrete durability as an important parameter. In 1992, the owner of an aluminum smelter sought help to prepare a specification that would ensure that the concrete in their new greenfield smelter would be durable. This paper describes the development of the parameters used to specify the concrete and the tests used to evaluate them. Similar tests were later conducted on cores extracted from the completed structure to compare the field concrete with that prepared in the laboratory.
