Abstract:
Engineers and other people who can understand the unique structural problems of old buildings have a responsibility to preserve them as part of our cultural environment. We should approach the task realizing that the specific components of older buildings should be given separate consideration, and we should be prepared to perform the necessary analysis to reconcile old buildings with today's standards and codes. As a society, we should reconsider out attitude that new is better, since the restoration and maintenance of existing structures is very often more reasonable than replacing them with new construction.
