Abstract:
The recent shift in consumer trend towards sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and vans has generated wheel loads in excess of current design requirements. Since cracking is undesirable in a garage, its floors are designed for both serviceability and strength. Wheel loads, rather than uniform loads, typically govern the design of slabs and beams supporting small slab areas. This warrants a review of the assumptions used in floor design and an increase in the design wheel load.
