Abstract:
After a brief survey of cable-stayed bridges in Germany -- especially those across the Rhine River -- the cable types used for these bridges and elsewhere are described. In addition, general requirements for the inspection of bridges in Germany are dealt with and special techniques for the inspection of stay cables are presented. Based on damage observed in stay cables, in which two bridges were reroped rather shortly after opening to traffic, improvements of the global design, the structural detailing, the sizing, and corrosion protection are shown, which aim to minimize future inspection and maintenance costs.
