Abstract:
A novel method to allow for the P-Delta effect in reinforced concrete sway frames designed to load and resistance factor principles (LRFD) is presented. The method is a modified version of an interaction technique previously developed for plastically analyzed frameworks. First-order elastic analysis is all that is needed to obtain the final design forces for each member. Members can then be designed with the help of conventional ultimate strength design aids. It is argued that more consistent solutions are obtained compared with existing methods of P-Delta design. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the use of the technique.
