Abstract:
Pozzolans and other cementitious materials have been used since ancient Roman times for construction of infrastructures. Since the 1930s, many dams and bridges have also been built using similar byproducts from the industrial age. The durability benefits of these supplementary materials are reviewed to introduce bridge designers and material specifiers to the current technology assessments. Based on the usage of pozzolans and the data presented, the case is made for much more extensive implementation in view of our goals of extending the service life of structures well beyond the present results being achieved.
