Abstract:
Guidance in existing ACI codes has been used successfully to design and construct reinforced concrete structures for waste storage and disposal applications. Although these documents are well suited for most applications, they do not address certain performance-based regulatory requirements. Before concrete structures that satisfy these requirements can be designed and constructed, additional guidance is needed to address concerns about cracking, permeability, and long-term durability. As a first step, ACI is encouraged to invite state and federal regulatory agencies to discuss the performance-based requirements contained in current regulations with engineers and constructors from the concrete industry.
