Abstract:
Pier caps are the suitable supports for carrying high loads from superstructures to substructures. An example of a pier cap subjected to vertical and horizontal forces is discussed in this article. The flow of forces within the pier cap is shown using the strut-and-tie model. A two-dimensional plane model in each of the longitudinal and transverse directions is presented and discussed.
