Abstract:
Envelopes of many reinforced concrete buildings in the Arabian Gulf area show signs of significant deterioration in the form of spalling, scaling, cracking, discoloration, disintegration and displacement This paper presents causes of observed deterioration and suggests solutions for new structures. Factors of severe environment and inadequate materials, design and construction practices are the main causes of observed deterioration. Traditional and non-traditional approaches for solving this problem are presented. Non-traditional approach proposed in this paper includes utilization of load-bearing concrete masonry as a building system and the use of fiber- reinforced plastics to replace conventional steel reinforcement.
